Innovative Kitchens & Curvaceous Countertops

Innovative Kitchens & Curvaceous Countertops

Furniture artisans at SplinterWorks, formed in 2009 by Miles Hartwell and Matt Withington in the South of England, show their "particular affinity with developing work that re-thinks how we prepare, cook and experience food" in this collection of inspiring kitchen designs that break the grid of the traditional shaped kitchen, and carries it through as a fully functioning yet more soulful place that can be appreciated in social settings as well as in routine daily tasks.

To get a sense of the company’s aesthetics, take a look at ‘Tipping Point, a typical Splinterworks project.

Tipping Point is an optically arresting sculptural feat; appearing to defy gravity by impossibly balancing a huge leaning volume on a knife-edge. The highly reflective mirror-polished stainless steel heightens the visual weightlessness offering a gleaming, eye-catching pair of balancing arcs in perfect symmetry. The lustrous surface creates elegant elongated reflections of the surrounding environment, rendering the whole piece to appear almost invisible. The reflective nature of the work makes the piece easy to integrate into a living space, and the circular design creates a self-contained working area which is easy to place into an open plan space.

The company has completed projects all around the world, and specializes in unique commissions of applied art, where every detail is considered, and accomplished. Take the ‘dime’ composition for example, a unit based on the effect of a spinning coin, which appears to be as much of a sculpture as it is a functional piece, and the singular curving sheet of stainless steel that forms ‘The Wave’.

Large kitchens present challenges in the planning of an effective workspace just as small ones do, furniture must be substantial in size to comfortably fill the area, yet should not cause a small task to take longer to execute as a result of a longer journey path; to combat this, the designers create intuitive zoning to make each typical kitchen activity effortless.

SplinterWorks aren’t just kitchen experts though, other interesting projects include the elevated, hammock-like ‘Vessel’ bathtub, and the ‘Stiletto’ which can be utilized as a desk, a console table or a dressing table, and features a slender ‘stacked heel’ silhouette and iconic ‘red sole’.

On the Essential kitchen, by Toncelli, an olive wood surface electronically slides away to reveal stainless steel food prep and cooking zones, doubling the work area. Photoelectric cells sense potential dangers/obstacles (such as other people/children/pets) and will block its movement to prevent harm.

17 | Designer: Team7
Height adjustable work surface at the push of a button.

18 | Designer: DuPont
Wireless charging points has become the ideal now that we find it more and more impossible to live without an array of mobile gadgetry, and this Corian worktop has been designed with that in mind. Teaming up with the PMA (Power Matters Alliance), DuPont building innovations aims to embed such charging solutions into solid Corian surfaces, used in home and office spaces.

19 | Designer: Zaha Hadid

24 | Source: Microsoft
A more far out concept seen in Microsoft’s vision of a futuristic home. Grace, the Microsoft Home computer, suggests dishes and recipes based on the ingredients and tools set on the kitchen counter.

25 | Designer: Whirlpool
At first glance this conceptual interactive cooktop by Whirlpool seems to do the impossible, but futuristic ideas like these are not as far off as one might think, as the technologies needed to make this a reality in our homes actually already exist. By utilizing induction heating, the countertop would remain cool to the touch, thus making a touchscreen area safe and practical. An overhead projector puts all of the graphics right in front of us, and a motion capture camera–similar to an Xbox Kinect–makes the interaction possible. No more splashing spaghetti sauce on your iPad whilst checking on your Twitter, Facebook, Spotify, and Pinterest, or look up new recipes right on your countertop!

Modern Kitchens From Elmar Cucine

Modern Kitchens From Elmar Cucine

We were browsing through Italian kitchen maker Elmar Cucine's catalog the other day and liked what we saw. The forms they use are simple with bold lines and sharp edges giving their designs somewhat of a masculine touch. This emphasis on simplicity is no accident and is expressed quite clearly in their philosophy: Elmar is not simply content to manufacture products, it wants to manufacture simple products. Simplicity is harmony, the happy balance between form and function that has its fulcrum, its deep meaning, in the human being. Some great images...

Wood Tones and White

Wood Tones and White

This serene open plan apartment design, created by interiors visualizer Dmitry Kobtsev, has a perfect balance of earthy wood notes and clean white décor.
1 |
Wall art provides the only splashes of color in this space, which pick out the colorful book spines adorning large wooden bookshelves.

2 |
The darkness over the surface of the dining table is picked out by a fabric-covered sofa in the adjacent lounge area, a set of three nesting tables, and a matching area rug.

3 |
4 |
The crisp snowy white backdrop continues into the run of kitchen cabinets, but a warm rush of walnut wood grain runs through, creating texture and heat. The contrasting stripe makes the proportions of the cooking space appear elongated and elegant, drawing the eye lightly along the run rather than letting it rest on what could have appeared as much heavier bulk of storage.

5 |
6 |
The kitchen hardware compliments the horizontal pattern, with long nickel bar handles following the flow.

7 |
8 |
Silver appliances punctuate the kitchen area at each end, whilst a central kitchen island appears barely there in matching facing to the flanking slab front doors.

9 |
A beech wood floor runs throughout the light apartment, toning perfecting with the lightest hue in the kitchen, and running seamlessly into the dining chairs that sit around a contrasting black tabletop.

New Age Contemporary Kitchens

New Age Contemporary Kitchens

Check out this collection from Cuisines Morel. The old rule book is thrown clean out of the window when it comes to finish, color and creativity, seeing jaw dropping combinations of rustic, knotty cabinets against a graffiti backdrop, or bright sky blue gloss sandwiched right inside rich wood and white glass. Team all this with flashy extractor units that could easily be mistaken for contemporary works of art, just as at home in a sculpture gallery, and you're on to a winner. 2 |
Modern chrome and nickel hardware sing against muted wood grain, and impressive pieces of industrial style lighting create an air of trendy loft living.

3 |
A rustic stone wall provides a stunning, contrasting pattern against the solid color slab cabinets.

4 |
5 |
A pale sink blends with the worktop, allowing the shiny modern faucet to take center stage, whilst vintage posters and prints create an eclectic look, and compliment the subtle streams of sophisticated color, appearing vibrant against mint green and warm grey.

6 |
7 |
Designer chairs and chic barstools keep the look polished and expensive, whilst book collections are carefully displayed to add a homely element to the vast, high ceiling spaces.
